Anthony trained at the
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee in the early ‘60s
under the celebrated R.S.A. Academicians, Alberto Morrocco,
David McLure and James Mackintosh Patrick. A further year was
spent obtaining a teaching qualification at Dundee. After
teaching 31 years in Tayside, Anthony took early retirement and
returned to painting full-time. A lover of
outdoor pursuits, Anthony has taken the Scottish landscape for
his source of inspiration; working mainly in oils and
watercolours. The artist prefers to work “alla prima”, i.e. ‘in
one go’, directly from the subject regardless of the weather.
The artist has often experienced rain streaming down his canvas
as well as being plagued by midges and blown sand. However, he
feels that the only sure way of capturing the mood of the
subject while creating a feeling of spontaneity in the work is
to be in the environment itself. His favourite location is the
Scottish west coast, especially the Western Isles, and often
travels to places of particular interest by bicycle or sea
kayak.
Having
exhibited extensively throughout Scotland and in London, his
works are found in private collections in the U.S.A., Canada,
Australia and Europe.
