David toys with everyday locations, the omnipresent
Scottish tenement building transformed into grand
colosseums, the commuter masses into a sea of figures,
the archetypical lushness of a meadow and the empty
forest. However, within these comfortable stages, the
foreign or ‘unreal’ are often placed; candy striped
lighthouses planted far from the sea, air balloons
without their pilots, life size beached toy boats
habited by birds, all of which adds to a specific sense
of surreality and foreboding danger. The overarching
themes in the work are the ideas of stability and safety
and the idealised notions of the remote and rural.
Bio: David graduated from Duncan
of
Jordanstone College of Art. Since then he has lectured
in their Design school from 1994-1998. He has been
extensively exhibiting his paintings both throughout the
country and internationally from 1997. David is a
regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy and the
Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. |
