“The main influence on my work is my response to my environment.
Over the years I have divided my time between my native Lewis and my
adopted Glasgow. Frequently returning to familiar views of the Isles
from my base in the city, I am literally “at home” amidst the great
beauty of the islands, by a loch side or on a beach and find equal
interest in the built environment. The places of the people, the
townships and the harbours where brightly coloured boats, drying
nets, tackle and masts, vie with the complementary colour, shape,
texture and tone of the rooftops, gables and dormers. There is much
visual stimulation on the islands and a scene can change in the
blink of an eye. I use a variety of materials, often in a single
work; currently using water based paint and inks on paper (though I
still love oil on canvas). I begin a new view with fine graphite
pencil drawings recording the detail. Developing ideas with quick
spontaneous watercolours and monoprints. I finish with bold
expressive paintings on location or in the studio.” |
