The significance of portraiture is not simply to record the likeness, or even to express the character of a particular person. It is that; but more. A good portrait has also to be a good painting, embodying the indefinable something that makes us aware of the presence of Art.

Originally from China, Wei Li Zhu, a figurative and still life artist, has a Batchelor of Arts Degree from Shanghai Art University and a Post-Graduate Diploma from Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen. Wei Li worked for three years at the Shanghai Television Centre before moving to Singapore to take up a post as a full-time lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. She now resides permanently in Aberdeen, married to a Scottish artist and works as a painter and portrait artist.

Since her initial association with The Rendezvous Gallery in 1994, Wei Li has painted over 75 commissioned portraits of children and adults from Singapore, Holland, France, Ireland, England, The United States of America and Scotland.
