WILLIE FULTON

Like many others and for reasons I know not, I long had a desire to live by the sea. When finances dictated and my children had grown, I was able to take early retirement from teaching in 1998 and give my full attention to painting.

Artists are inevitably influenced by their environment and my subject matter has ranged from dark figurative works based on the city, abstract, still life and so on. However, living on the Island of Harris I could not help but be seduced by the wonder of light, changing weather and the moods of a unique landscape.

Each day, from my studio I gaze across the Minch towards Skye. Much of my work is an attempt to understand the nature of landscape, sky and sea through transient, remembered light. Each work I see as a performance, which hopefully, is a development from the last, but answers are never quite complete. This ensures that I am compelled to return to the easel in the hope for some kind of solution.
